On Sunday night, I realized I had nothing to put in the school lunches, so I made the Banana bread. It’s interesting that Banana bread can come in so many shapes and sizes so to speak. I have eaten banana bread in Fiji for breakfast, its big in Australia too and we traditionally make banana cake with icing here in New Zealand. And this recipe is English, I presume. All these variations but really all the same thing.
I was at the International Cultural Festival in Auckland on Sunday which as its name would suggest, was jam packed full of all the cultures now living in Auckland, from Afghanistan to Jamaican. There was every kind of food imaginable to choose from, from pineapple ice-cream to Turkish delight.
What I loved was the way people of all nationalities were able to get involved in the Maori display. There were people splayed out on the grass weaving flax and making Kites. It was wonderful to see the indigenous Maori culture come to life and be shared in this way by all.
So I whipped up the banana bread, at 9 pm, despite being very tired, but by 10.30pm I hauled it out of the oven, cooked and looking delicious. The recipe was very similar to my banana cake but with the addition of cinnamon and walnuts.
Despite being tired, I still had to get up once or twice during the night to do blood tests on my daughter. I am seriously going to look into the freestyle libre which is a blood testing system that involves the insertion of a sensor in the arm and a reader device swiped over this sensor, can measure the blood sugar, no blood or finger pricks required. It’s much more convenient, only expensive, but I feel it will be well worth it.
