I just felt like making crème caramel. Lo and behold, there is a recipe for it in my “Great British Bake Off Big Book of Baking”. I decided not the do the coffee version, as I don’t think anyone around here would want to eat it, so I replaced the coffee for vanilla.
Having made Arancini balls yesterday to take to a BBQ, this sounded much easier! I boiled the caramel and mixed up the eggs and cream to make the custard. I have had this desert often, it is an especially popular desert in Brazil, and I have always wanted to learn how to make it. To be honest, it was easier than I expected. It’s just cream and sugar mixed with eggs and then baked in a water bath. I had to leave them in the fridge overnight so the custard could harden and the caramel could turn to liquid.
As a result, I didn’t take them to my sister’s place where we had been invited for dinner.
Funnily enough, their son, was planning an adventure, sleeping rough in the garden overnight. So at about 8.30pm, after eating our roast potatoes with lamb dinner, and while tucking into a home-made apple pie by Nadia Lim, he said he would be heading off now, to go to bed! He had a blanket, and a pair of sock, PJs and a hoodie and that was it. ‘Ok, good night,’ said his parents, nonchalantly. Then to us, they said, ‘we’ll see how long he lasts.’
Sure enough, 30 seconds later, he came back in and said, ‘I think I’ll sleep with the dog this time, just as a practice.’ He lasted until 1.30 in the morning.
Isn’t it great that kids want to give things a go, and even better that parents are willing to let them try. It’s how we learn I guess. We all had to laugh, of course at this gallant boys attempt at adventure in the garden.
And the Crème Caramel, I turned it out the next morning and the luscious rich caramel sauce poured all over it. What a success and delicious. Husband loves this one! 🙂
