This is Mary’s signature bake.  But before I make it I’ve decided I have to get back to my novel.  My writing has suffered the last two months because I am baking!!!  Haha.  Fun, fun, fun, but that’s not going to get my novel written this year.

I was going to my Tuesday writer’s lunch and as we had no food in the house, I did the supermarket shopping first.  I raced around the supermarket.  Then at the check out counter, loaded the conveyor belt with my shopping. As I was pulled the dishwashing liquid out of the trolley, I noticed that the lid had come off and it was dripping all over my trousers and the floor.  The check out assistant kindly brought around a tissue and cleaned it up.  Then I hauled out the 4.5kg bag of potatoes, and it too was covered in dishwashing liquid.  He kindly wiped it, no need to get another one I said.  The same with the bag of mushrooms, “just tip them out of the paper bag into a plastic one” I smiled.  We were nearly there and I still had 20 minutes to get to my lunch.  He handed me the eggs.  I place them gently in the trolley, in the top section, you know, just to be safe…they slid through the grill and smashed on the floor. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” I said to the guy.  By this time, there was a queue behind me.  ‘I’ll go and get another packet,” I said and raced off but couldn’t find them anywhere, (new supermarket that I wasn’t familiar with). They had been one of the first things I had put in my trolley, free range eggs, green box so headed to the start of the supermarket.  But aisle after aisle, there were no eggs.! I finally asked an employee, “aisle 5” she said.  I ran, grabbed the eggs and headed  back.  The shop assistant put the eggs in a bag and said “I’ll put them in the trolley for you this time.”  I smiled in acknowledgement.  Paid and left.

On the drive over the bridge to the lunch

Nice lunch

all I could taste was mauve dishwashing liquid.

Anyway, today I am writing first!! I want to bake, but I am seated in front of my computer, with a large pot of tea so I don’t have to leave in a hurry and I will write.  (and bake later :))

And bake later I did, 5 days later.  It was Friday afternoon and the rain was tinkling down.  Nice afternoon for a bake.  Mary’s Chocolate and Orange Tart had been staring at me all week out of the pages of the cookbook.  I whizzed up the pastry, luscious and soft made with icing sugar, butter, an egg yolk and water.  This I rolled out, then baked blind.  For entertainment I put on The Great British Bake Off Master Classes with Paul and Mary and drank a new Sparkling Soda I’d discovered, Feijoa, Pear and Elderflower!! Interesting!

It felt like I was having breakfast as I always eat Feijoas for breakfast but refreshing!  And the masterclasses had me writing down the recipes for camembert and quince jelly flat bread (Ahh… Yum), as well as Mary’s Tart Tatin, one of my favourite things!  I might have to bake them and put the recipes here they were so good.

Once the pastry shell was baked, I melted the dark chocolate and butter.  Then of course I discovered I needed half a dozen eggs and only had 3 so took a quick trip down to the Fresh Collective on Alberton.  I grabbed a nice piece of salmon for dinner, which I would bake in the oven in tinfoil with honey, lemon slices, capers and seasoning.  Nice and simple for a Friday night with salad.

Now back to the fillings, I added eggs and flour to the melted chocolate and poured into the mould.  Then I melted the white chocolate and butter, added orange zest, and swirled that around the top. This looked decadent!  The recipe said to bake for 10-12 minutes,  and I thought to myself, it’ll take longer than that.  It was quite liquid.

Luckily I put the salmon in the oven quite soon after, because voila, the tart was done in the said time!!!  I pulled it out and had to eat a slice, still hot, straight after dinner, with cream.  Mmmmmmmmmm.
