It’s the school holidays and before we head away to stay with my Mum, I thought I’d whip up some bread. Not sure if this is really a good idea, but I’m doing it. This particular loaf is enriched with egg and flavoured with saffron. I soaked a teaspoon of saffron in warm water for an hour before adding it to the bread mixture.

Saffron infused water
It gave it a beautiful yellow colour, like cake! I mixed all the ingredients,
then proved it for an hour or two.
I punched it down and made the plait, then set it on a tray covered in plastic bags to rise in the car on the trip up north. By the time we got there, it was huge.
A bit over proved but it still tasted amazing.

a bit over proved in the car ride North :/
Nothing like fresh bread in the house.

The finished product 🙂
Speaking of yellow I bought Turmeric Powder from the market last time, from the guy who imports it from Gourmet goodness http://www.unconditionalcompassion
Health benefits include an “overall decreased cancer risk, improved digestive health, and it is an excellent source of manganese, vitamin B6, dietary fiber and potassium.”
I added a teaspoon to the soup yesterday. It really enriched it with a lovely depth of flavour.
In fact the guy that sold me the turmeric said he takes a teaspoon a day!
